Review: Death Down the Aisle
I recently needed to drive eight hours by myself to visit some of my cousins in Illinois. While I had plenty of podcasts that I could listen to, I decided to check out one of the audiobooks offered on NetGalley. None of the Listen Now options appealed to me so I requested two interesting possibilities and was thrilled when one of them was approved in time for my trip.
Death Down the Aisle was written by Colleen Cambridge and is narrated by Jennifer M. Dixon. The conceit is that Phyllida Bright is the housekeeper at Mallowan Hall, home of Agatha Christie and her second husband Max Mallowan. This sixth book in the series centers around the marriage of Phyllida's friends Dr. John Bhatt and Emily Partparker at the estate of one of Emily's distant relatives. The matriarch of the Coatesworth family, Lady Artemis, has insisted that all the cousins come to the wedding. This creates some tension as both the former and current Mrs. Heath Blanton are in attendance. Before you know it, there's a dead body and Phyllida needs to pin down the killer.
Cambridge's descriptions of both the characters and their surrounding are rich and lush, especially when voiced by Dixon. The story is quick paced and made my long drive go by quickly. I had an hour or so left when I got home, so I finished it one morning while my husband was still in bed. I couldn't wait to see how it wrapped up.
Death Down the Death is a delight! I can't wait to enjoy the first five books and discover how Phyllida became an amateur detective. And hopefully, Colleen Cambridge will keep writing them!
