Review: The Afternoon Tea Murders
I've mentioned before how much I love Miss Jane Treen and The Secret Detective Agency series. I'm happy to tell you that there is a fourth book out in this wonderful series.
The Afternoon Tea Murders takes Jane from London to Deven where Arthur Cilento has been working on another codebreaking mission. Officially, she's there to do an audit on how the mission is running, but as always, there's much more going on beneath the surface.
Arthur's manservant, Benson, is once again more and more important in the investigation (and to be honest, I think he could be even more involved). And as always, Marmaduke (Jane's one-eyed orange cat) makes the trip to Devon with her.
The mystery is well plotted and not easy to figure out. There are twists and turns along the way that keep you engaged throughout the book. Helena Dixon's ability to create believable and unique characters shines through again. Plus the description of what life was like in the UK during World War II is fascinating. (I always have to wonder if those of us living today could handle the rationing, blackouts, and other issues that were common during that time.)
On my earlier review, I forgot to mention that this and all of the Secret Detective Agency series (and Helena Dixon's other books) are available as part of Kindle Unlimited. A subscription is currently $12.71 a month and I find most of my new cozy mysteries through KU recommendations. If you have a Kindle, it's worth checking out. (Kobo users can make use of a similar program too.)
The Afternoon Tea Murders is another winner and I'll say it again–long may the Secret Detective Agency prevail! Now I'm back to counting the days until the next book in this delightful series comes out in October.
